Best eSIM for Spain 2026: Data Plans for Travelers
Find the best eSIM for Spain in 2026. Compare plans, prices, networks (Movistar, Vodafone, Orange), and get coverage tips for Barcelona, Madrid & the islands.
Quick Answer
For most travelers visiting Spain in 2026, a 5 GB / 30-day eSIM plan at $14.99 covers a 1–2 week trip. Spain eSIM plans typically connect to Movistar or Vodafone ES, both of which offer strong nationwide coverage including the Balearic and Canary Islands. Install before you fly — you’ll connect immediately at Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona El Prat, or any Spanish airport.

Why Use an eSIM in Spain?
Spain requires passport registration for physical SIM cards. That means visiting a Movistar or Vodafone shop, waiting in line, and dealing with Spanish-language paperwork. In tourist-heavy areas like Barcelona’s Las Ramblas, SIM shops are often overpriced resellers rather than official carrier stores.
An eSIM is simpler:
- Install before you land — no shop visits or registration
- No passport paperwork — online eSIM purchases are exempt from Spanish ID requirements
- No SIM swap — keep your home number active
- Covers the islands — works in Mallorca, Ibiza, Tenerife, and all Spanish territories
- EU multi-country option — many plans also work in neighboring Portugal and France
Which Mobile Networks Does a Spain eSIM Use?
Spain has four mobile networks:
| Network | 4G Coverage | 5G Coverage | Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Movistar (Telefonica) | 99%+ population | 1,500+ cities/towns | Best overall coverage, strongest rural reach | — |
| Vodafone ES | 98% population | 700+ cities/towns | Strong in cities and tourist areas | Slightly weaker in rural interior |
| Orange ES | 97% population | 500+ cities/towns | Good urban coverage | Behind Movistar in rural Spain |
| MasMovil/Yoigo | 95% population | Limited | Budget option | Relies on Orange roaming in gaps |
Most travel eSIM plans for Spain route through Movistar or Vodafone ES. Movistar has the best rural coverage — important if you’re driving through Andalusia, walking the Camino de Santiago, or visiting smaller towns.

Tips for Using Mobile Data in Spain
Download These Apps Before You Go
- Google Maps — Download offline maps for your destinations. Spanish cities have complex layouts, especially old quarters (Gothic Quarter in Barcelona, Albaicin in Granada).
- Google Translate — Download the Spanish language pack. Camera translation helps with menus and signs.
- Renfe — Spain’s national train app for AVE high-speed trains and regional services.
- Cabify — Spain’s most popular ride-hailing app (more reliable than Uber in many Spanish cities).
- WhatsApp — Essential in Spain for communication with businesses and locals.
Walking the Camino de Santiago: Connectivity Guide
The Camino de Santiago is one of Spain’s most popular experiences. Here’s what to expect for data coverage along the main routes:
| Camino route | Coverage | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Camino Frances (most popular) | Good in towns, fair between | All major stops (Pamplona, Burgos, Leon, Santiago) have strong 4G. Meseta sections have gaps. |
| Camino del Norte (coastal) | Good | Coastal route has better coverage than interior routes. |
| Camino Portugues | Good | Well-covered along the main route through Galicia. |
| Between villages | Variable | Expect 30–60 minute stretches without signal on rural sections. |
Camino tip: Download offline maps and your route guide before starting each day’s walk. Don’t rely on mobile data for real-time navigation between villages.
Connectivity in Specific Locations
| Location | Data coverage | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Madrid (city center) | Excellent (4G/5G) | Full coverage including Metro stations |
| Barcelona (city center) | Excellent (4G/5G) | Full coverage; Sagrada Familia area can be congested |
| Seville, Granada, Cordoba | Excellent (4G) | No issues in Andalusian cities |
| Mallorca | Excellent in Palma, good elsewhere (4G) | Rural interior and mountain roads may drop |
| Ibiza | Good (4G/5G in town) | Beach clubs and main areas covered |
| Tenerife / Gran Canaria | Good (4G) | Tourist areas well covered; interior mountains patchy |
| AVE high-speed trains | Good (4G) | On-board Wi-Fi available; eSIM data often faster |
| Costa del Sol (Malaga, Marbella) | Excellent (4G/5G) | Full coastal coverage |
| La Rioja wine country | Good (4G) | Towns and wineries covered; remote vineyard roads variable |
Save Data in Spain
- Use hotel and cafe Wi-Fi for video calls and uploads
- Download offline maps — Barcelona and Madrid are large, navigation-heavy cities
- Spain’s late dinner culture (9–11 PM) means you’ll be out using data later than usual — plan accordingly
- Set social media apps to not auto-play videos

| Factor | eSIM | Local SIM (Movistar Prepago) | EU Roaming (home SIM) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price (1 week, 5 GB) | $14.99 | ~€15–20 + registration | Varies (check carrier) |
| Setup time | Before departure | 30–60 min at shop | None (if included) |
| ID registration | No | Yes (passport + selfie) | N/A |
| Works in other EU countries | Plan-dependent | Limited roaming | Yes |

For US/Canadian visitors: Carrier day-passes ($5–10/day) are expensive for trips longer than 2–3 days. A $14.99 eSIM saves significantly. For UK visitors: Post-Brexit EU roaming charges vary by carrier. Check your plan or grab a Spain eSIM as a reliable alternative.
