How Much Mobile Data Do You Need When Traveling?
Calculate exactly how much data you need for your trip. Breakdown by activity, trip length, and traveler type — with plan recommendations.
Quick Answer
Most travelers use 500 MB to 1.5 GB per day on the road. For a one-week trip, a 3–5 GB plan is enough for navigation, messaging, and social media. For two weeks, go with 5–10 GB. Heavy users who stream video or join video calls should plan for 1.5–3 GB per day.
Here’s the shortcut:
| Traveler type | Daily usage | 7-day trip | 14-day trip | Recommended plan |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light | 200–500 MB | 1.5–3.5 GB | 3–7 GB | 3 GB / 15 days — $9.99 |
| Moderate | 500 MB–1.5 GB | 3.5–10 GB | 7–20 GB | 5 GB / 30 days — $14.99 |
| Heavy | 1.5–3 GB | 10–21 GB | 20–42 GB | 10–20 GB / 30 days — $19.99–$34.99 |

How Much Data Does Each Activity Use?
This is where most guides get vague. Here are measured figures based on real-world usage:
Navigation and Maps
| Activity | Data per hour | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Google Maps (active navigation) | 5–10 MB | Very efficient; loads map tiles as needed |
| Google Maps (browsing/searching) | 2–5 MB | Less data than active turn-by-turn |
| Waze | 10–20 MB | More data than Google Maps due to real-time traffic |
| Offline maps (Google Maps, Maps.me) | 0 MB | Download before your trip |
Daily estimate for a tourist using maps 2–3 hours: 15–30 MB
Pro tip: Download offline maps for your destination before leaving. Google Maps lets you save entire regions. Even with data, offline maps load faster and work in subway tunnels and rural dead zones.
Social Media
| App | Data per hour of active use | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram (browsing feed) | 100–300 MB | Photo-heavy; stories use more |
| Instagram (posting photos) | 5–15 MB per photo | Depends on resolution |
| TikTok / YouTube Shorts | 300–500 MB | Auto-playing video is data-hungry |
| X (Twitter) | 50–150 MB | Text-heavy feeds use less |
| 80–200 MB | Similar to Instagram | |
| 30–100 MB | Depends on subreddit (text vs. media) | |
| 30–80 MB | Mostly text |
Daily estimate for moderate social media use (1–2 hours): 150–500 MB
Data-saving tip: Disable auto-play videos in every social media app. On Instagram, this alone can cut usage by 50%. On TikTok, one hour of scrolling can burn through 500 MB.
Messaging and Voice Calls
| App | Data per hour | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| WhatsApp/Telegram text | 1–3 MB | Negligible |
| WhatsApp voice call | 30–40 MB | Efficient compression |
| WhatsApp video call | 250–400 MB | Major data consumer |
| FaceTime audio | 30–40 MB | Similar to WhatsApp voice |
| FaceTime video | 200–400 MB | HD uses more |
| iMessage / SMS over data | < 1 MB | Text only; photos add 1–5 MB each |
| LINE / WeChat text | 1–5 MB | Similar to WhatsApp |
Daily estimate for messaging + 1 voice call: 20–50 MB
Daily estimate for messaging + 1 video call (30 min): 150–250 MB
Video Streaming
| Service | Data per hour (SD) | Data per hour (HD) | Data per hour (4K) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Netflix | 700 MB | 3 GB | 7 GB |
| YouTube | 500 MB | 1.5 GB | 5 GB |
| Spotify (audio only) | 40–70 MB | N/A | N/A |
| Podcasts | 30–60 MB | N/A | N/A |
Recommendation: Do not stream video over mobile data while traveling unless you have a large plan. One hour of Netflix in HD uses 3 GB — that’s an entire week’s worth of data for a light user. Download content on Wi-Fi instead.
Email and Work
| Activity | Data per use | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Checking email (text) | 1–5 MB per session | Attachments add significantly |
| Email with attachments | 5–25 MB per email | PDFs and images |
| Google Docs / Sheets | 10–30 MB per hour | Real-time collaboration uses more |
| Slack / Teams messaging | 20–50 MB per hour | Channels with images use more |
| Zoom / Teams video call | 500 MB–1.5 GB per hour | Audio-only: 50–80 MB/hr |
| Uploading photos to cloud | 3–8 MB per photo | Raw files: 15–30 MB each |
Daily estimate for light remote work (email + messaging): 50–100 MB
Daily estimate for heavy remote work (video calls + collaboration): 1–3 GB

How to Reduce Your Data Usage While Traveling
These tips can cut your consumption by 30–50%:
Before Your Trip
- Download offline maps — Google Maps, Maps.me, or OsmAnd all support offline areas
- Download music and podcasts — Spotify, Apple Music, and podcast apps let you save content offline
- Download translation packs — Google Translate supports offline language files
- Pre-download entertainment — Netflix, YouTube, and Disney+ all support offline viewing
- Update all apps — App updates on mobile data can use hundreds of MB
During Your Trip
- Disable auto-play video — Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, X all have this setting
- Turn off background app refresh — Settings → General → Background App Refresh (iPhone) or Settings → Apps → each app (Android)
- Use Wi-Fi whenever available — Hotels, cafes, airports, trains (some), and libraries typically offer free Wi-Fi
- Set apps to Wi-Fi-only for backups — Google Photos, iCloud, Dropbox should only sync on Wi-Fi
- Use data-saver modes — Chrome, YouTube, and most social media apps have built-in data-saving modes
- Monitor your usage — iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Current Period. Android: Settings → Network → Data Usage

What Happens if You Run Out of Data?
On e-sim.onl, you can purchase an additional plan if your data runs out. Other options:
- Connect to Wi-Fi — Most destinations have free Wi-Fi at hotels, cafes, and public spaces
- Buy a local SIM card — Available at airports, convenience stores, and carrier shops
- Top up — Some eSIM providers support top-ups through their app or website
Running out of data won’t affect your ability to receive calls or texts on your primary SIM — only the eSIM data line stops working.
