Compare the best eSIM plans for France in 2026. Pricing, 5G coverage, networks (Orange, SFR, Bouygues), Paris tips, and Riviera/Alps connectivity.
Quick Answer
For most visitors to France in 2026, a 5 GB / 30-day eSIM plan at $14.99 is the sweet spot for a 1–2 week trip. France eSIM plans typically connect to Orange or SFR, which deliver the best nationwide coverage — from Paris to Provence to the ski slopes. Why Use an eSIM in France?
France requires ID registration for physical SIM cards, which means visiting an Orange or SFR shop with your passport. Paris shops are crowded, and staff don’t always speak English. Outside Paris, finding a carrier shop in smaller towns can be difficult.
An eSIM bypasses all of this:
- Install before you land — no shop visits, no passport queues
- No physical SIM swap — keep your home number for calls and texts
- Works instantly — connect the second your plane touches down
- Multi-country option — many plans also cover other EU countries for train trips to neighboring countries
- Top up remotely if you need more data
Which Mobile Networks Does a France eSIM Use?
France has four mobile networks:
| Network | 4G Coverage | 5G Coverage | Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Orange | 99%+ population | 2,500+ cities/towns | Best overall coverage, strongest rural reach | — |
| SFR | 98% population | 1,000+ cities/towns | Strong in cities, good rural | Slightly behind Orange in remote areas |
| Bouygues Telecom | 98% population | 800+ cities/towns | Good urban coverage | Weaker in mountains and rural south |
| Free Mobile | 95% population | Limited | Budget carrier | Uses Orange roaming in gaps |
Most travel eSIM plans for France route through Orange or SFR. Orange is the gold standard — if your eSIM connects to Orange, you’ll have the best possible coverage across France, including rural Brittany, mountain villages, and Corsica.

Is 5G Available in France for eSIM Users?
Yes. France’s 5G rollout has accelerated significantly:
- Paris: Widespread 5G across all arrondissements, CDG and Orly airports, major train stations (Gare du Nord, Gare de Lyon)
- Lyon, Marseille, Nice, Toulouse, Bordeaux: Good 5G coverage in city centers
- French Riviera: 5G in Nice, Cannes, Monaco (separate country but Orange roaming works)
- Ski resorts: Variable — major resorts like Chamonix and Courchevel have 4G; 5G is limited in mountain areas
- Rural France: 4G LTE, typically 20–50 Mbps
Your phone must support French 5G bands (n78) to connect. Check your device in our eSIM compatible phones guide.

Tips for Using Mobile Data in France
Download These Apps Before You Go
- Google Maps — Download offline maps for Paris and your other destinations. Paris’s narrow streets and numbered arrondissements make navigation tricky without GPS.
- Citymapper — Superior to Google Maps for Paris public transit. Real-time Metro, RER, and bus information.
- Google Translate — Download the French language pack. Camera translation is invaluable for restaurant menus.
- SNCF Connect — For booking and tracking French trains (TGV, TER, Intercity).
- WhatsApp — Widely used in France for personal and business communication.
Paris Metro: Wi-Fi vs. eSIM
The Paris Metro has free Wi-Fi at stations (provided by Orange), but:
- It requires registration and login at each station
- It doesn’t work between stations (no cellular coverage in some tunnels either)
- It’s slow during rush hour
Your eSIM is better. Most Metro stations and newer lines have cellular coverage. Older deep lines (like Line 12) may have brief drops between stations, but coverage has improved significantly with recent infrastructure upgrades.
Connectivity in Specific Locations
| Location | Data coverage | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Paris (all arrondissements) | Excellent (4G/5G) | Full coverage including most Metro stations |
| French Riviera (Nice, Cannes, Saint-Tropez) | Excellent (4G/5G) | Strong coastal coverage |
| Provence (Avignon, Aix, Luberon) | Good to excellent (4G) | Villages well covered; remote lavender fields may drop |
| Loire Valley castles | Good (4G) | Coverage at all major chateaux |
| Mont Saint-Michel | Good (4G) | Coverage on the island and causeway |
| French Alps (Chamonix, Annecy) | Good in towns (4G) | Drops at high altitude on ski runs and hiking trails |
| Corsica | Good in towns (4G) | Interior mountains can be patchy |
| TGV high-speed trains | Good (4G) | On-board Wi-Fi available but eSIM data often faster |
| Bordeaux wine region | Good (4G) | Chateaux and towns covered; deep vineyard areas variable |
| Normandy (D-Day beaches, Bayeux) | Good (4G) | Full coverage at all major sites |
Save Data in France
- Use hotel and cafe Wi-Fi for video calls and large uploads
- Download offline maps — Paris alone can eat data with constant GPS navigation
- Set social media apps to not auto-play videos
- Download museum audio guides before visiting (Louvre, Musee d’Orsay, Versailles all have apps)
France eSIM vs. Local SIM vs. EU Roaming
| Factor | eSIM | Local SIM (Orange Holiday) | EU Roaming (home SIM) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price (1 week, 5 GB) | $14.99 | ~€20 + registration | Varies (check carrier) |
| Setup time | Before departure | 30–60 min at shop | None (if included) |
| ID registration | No | Yes (passport required) | N/A |
| Works in other EU countries | Plan-dependent | Limited roaming | Yes |
| Available 24/7 | Yes | Shop hours only | N/A |
For US/Canadian visitors: Your carrier’s international day-pass ($5–10/day) adds up fast. A $14.99 eSIM for a two-week trip saves $55–125. For UK visitors: Post-Brexit, many UK carriers now charge for EU roaming. Check your plan — a France eSIM is often cheaper. For Australian visitors: Telstra/Optus international roaming is expensive. eSIM is the clear winner.
Frequently Asked Questions About France eSIMs
Do I need to register my eSIM in France?
No. French law requires ID registration for physical SIM cards bought in shops. eSIM plans purchased online through e-sim.onl are exempt.
Will my eSIM work on the Paris Metro?
Yes, in most stations and on newer lines. Brief drops may occur on older deep tunnel sections, but overall coverage is good and improving.
Can I use my France eSIM in Monaco?
Monaco is a separate country with its own network (Monaco Telecom). Some France eSIM plans include Monaco roaming; others don’t. If you’re spending significant time in Monaco, check your plan details or consider a Europe-wide plan.
