AT&T International Roaming vs eSIM: Cost Comparison

Quick Answer

AT&T International Day Pass costs $12 per day and uses your domestic data. A travel eSIM costs $4.99–$34.99 for an entire trip depending on data and destination. For a two-week trip, AT&T charges $168 while an eSIM costs $14.99–$19.99. The eSIM saves you $148–$153. The only advantage of AT&T’s plan is simplicity — there is nothing to install.

What Is AT&T International Day Pass?

AT&T International Day Pass is a roaming add-on that lets you use your domestic plan abroad. Here is how it works:

• Cost: $12 per day
• Triggered by usage: The $12 charge applies on any day you use data, make a call, or send a text abroad
• Data: Draws from your domestic AT&T data allowance
• Coverage: 210+ countries and territories
• Speed: Uses local partner networks; speeds vary by location
• Calls and texts: Included in the daily fee (uses your domestic minutes/texts)

What AT&T Includes

AT&T International Day Pass Gotchas

• Charges per calendar day, not 24-hour period — using data at 11:55 PM and 12:05 AM counts as two days ($24)
• Uses your domestic data — if you have a 15 GB plan and use 8 GB abroad, you only have 7 GB left at home
• No way to pause — once triggered, it charges for that day even if you only used 1 MB
• Overage risk — if you exceed your domestic data cap while abroad, throttling or overage charges apply
• Not available on all plans — some older or prepaid AT&T plans are not eligible

What About AT&T Passport Plans?

AT&T has discontinued the old Passport plans, but some customers still ask about them. The current options are:

Can I Keep My AT&T Number While Using an eSIM?

Yes. This is how dual SIM works:

1. AT&T SIM stays active as your voice/text line — keeps your number, receives calls and texts
2. Travel eSIM handles data — maps, browsing, apps, social media

You run both simultaneously. To prevent AT&T roaming charges, disable data roaming on your AT&T line and route all data through the travel eSIM.

How to Disable AT&T Data Roaming (Keep Number Active)

iPhone:

1. Settings → Cellular → AT&T line
2. Turn off Data Roaming
3. Under Cellular Data, select your travel eSIM as the data line

Android:

1. Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs → AT&T SIM
2. Turn off Roaming
3. Set your travel eSIM as the default data SIM

This way, AT&T does not charge you anything for international use, while you still receive calls and texts on your AT&T number (incoming calls/texts may still incur charges — check your AT&T plan).

How Much Data Do You Actually Need?

AT&T Day Pass uses your domestic data, which sounds generous — but most AT&T plans have 15–50 GB shared across your domestic and international usage. A travel eSIM gives you a dedicated data bucket for your trip.

Typical Travel Data Usage

Most travelers fall into the light-to-moderate range. A 5 GB plan ($14.99) covers a full week comfortably. A 10 GB plan ($19.99) covers two weeks with moderate use.

When Does AT&T International Day Pass Make Sense?

AT&T Day Pass is worth considering only in narrow situations:

1. Very short trips (1–2 days) — at $12–$24 total, the convenience of not installing anything may be worth the premium
2. You need to make/receive lots of voice calls — Day Pass includes voice calling from your AT&T number. A data-only eSIM requires WhatsApp or FaceTime for calls.
3. Your employer pays your phone bill — if you are not personally paying the roaming charges, convenience wins over cost
4. You cannot figure out eSIM setup — though it takes 5 minutes with our setup guides

For any trip of 3+ days where you are paying your own bill, an eSIM is the better financial decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does AT&T charge for roaming if I only receive a text?

Yes. Any usage — sending or receiving a text, making or receiving a call, or using any data — triggers the $12 daily charge. Even a single incoming text counts.

Can I turn off AT&T International Day Pass?

You can prevent charges by turning off data roaming and putting your phone in airplane mode abroad. But if you forget and your phone connects even briefly, you will be charged. Using an eSIM for data while keeping AT&T roaming disabled is a safer approach.

Does the eSIM affect my AT&T plan?

No. The eSIM is a completely separate line. Your AT&T plan, number, and account remain unchanged. You are just adding a second data source.

Can I use my AT&T hotspot abroad with an eSIM?

You can use your travel eSIM as a hotspot (if the plan allows it) instead of drawing from your AT&T hotspot allowance. This keeps your AT&T data untouched.

What if I need to make a phone call abroad?

With an eSIM, use WhatsApp, FaceTime, or Google Meet for calls over data. For traditional voice calls from your AT&T number, you would need AT&T Day Pass active. Most travelers find data-based calls sufficient.
