Verizon TravelPass vs eSIM: Which Saves More?

Quick Answer

Verizon TravelPass costs $10 per day and uses your domestic data allowance. A travel eSIM costs $4.99–$34.99 for an entire trip. For a two-week vacation, Verizon charges $140 while an eSIM costs $14.99–$19.99. The eSIM saves you $120–$125 and gives you a dedicated data bucket that does not touch your Verizon plan.

What Is Verizon TravelPass?

Verizon TravelPass is an international roaming feature that extends your domestic plan to 210+ countries. Here is how it works:

Verizon TravelPass Fine Print

• $10/day per line — a family of four pays $40/day ($560 for a 14-day trip)
• Calendar day billing — using data at 11:58 PM and 12:02 AM triggers two $10 charges
• Domestic data consumption — your abroad usage counts against your Verizon plan’s data cap
• Speed depends on local network — Verizon cannot guarantee speeds abroad
• Must be enrolled before travel — you need to add TravelPass to your account via the My Verizon app or by calling 611

What About Verizon International Monthly Plans?

Verizon also offers monthly international plan add-ons for frequent travelers:

The $100/month plan gives you 10 GB of dedicated international data, which is better value than TravelPass for trips longer than 10 days. But a 10 GB eSIM at $19.99 still costs 80% less.

Can I Keep My Verizon Number While Using an eSIM?

Yes. Dual SIM lets you run both lines simultaneously:

• Verizon SIM — stays active for calls, texts, and your phone number
• Travel eSIM — handles all data (maps, apps, browsing, social media)

How to Set It Up

iPhone:

1. Settings → Cellular → Verizon line → Turn off Data Roaming
2. Under Cellular Data, select your travel eSIM as the data line

Android:

1. Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs → Verizon SIM → Turn off Roaming
2. Set your travel eSIM as the default data SIM

This configuration means Verizon does not charge TravelPass fees (no data roaming = no trigger), while you stay reachable on your Verizon number.

Important: Incoming calls and texts on your Verizon number may still incur pay-per-use international charges if TravelPass is not active. Check your Verizon plan details or use Wi-Fi calling to avoid these.

Speed Comparison: Verizon TravelPass vs. eSIM

Both Verizon TravelPass and a travel eSIM connect to local carrier networks in your destination country. The speeds are typically the same because the underlying infrastructure is identical.

The speed difference is negligible. The cost difference is enormous.

When Does Verizon TravelPass Make Sense?

TravelPass is worth considering only in specific situations:

1. Trips of 1–2 days — at $10–$20 total, the convenience of zero setup may justify the cost
2. You need traditional voice calling from your Verizon number — TravelPass includes voice; a data-only eSIM requires VoIP apps
3. Your employer covers roaming costs — if you are not paying, convenience beats savings
4. You are traveling to Canada or Mexico — TravelPass is $5/day to these countries, making the cost gap smaller (though an eSIM is still cheaper)
5. Your phone does not support eSIM — check in our eSIM compatible phones guide

For any trip of 3+ days where you pay your own bill, an eSIM saves significant money.

How to Switch from Verizon TravelPass to eSIM

Step 1: Check Compatibility

Most iPhones from iPhone XS onward and Samsung/Pixel phones from 2020 onward support eSIM. Verify in our eSIM compatible phones guide.

Step 2: Remove or Disable TravelPass

Log in to My Verizon or call 611 to remove TravelPass from your account. This prevents accidental $10/day charges if data roaming toggles on by mistake.

Step 3: Buy Your Travel eSIM

Browse plans for your destination at e-sim.onl/destinations/.

Step 4: Install Before Departure

Scan the QR code while on Wi-Fi at home:

• iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Use QR Code
• Android: Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs → Add eSIM

Step 5: Configure and Go

Set the eSIM as your data line. Disable data roaming on Verizon. When you land, your eSIM connects to local networks automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Verizon TravelPass charge me if I only receive a text?

Yes. Any usage — including receiving an incoming text — triggers the $10 daily charge. This catches many travelers off guard.

Can I use Verizon TravelPass and an eSIM together?

Technically yes, but there is no reason to. If you have an eSIM for data, disable Verizon’s data roaming so TravelPass does not trigger. Using both means paying for both.

Will Verizon know I am using an eSIM instead of TravelPass?

Verizon does not monitor your eSIM. From their perspective, your Verizon line simply is not roaming (because you disabled data roaming). They will not charge you anything extra.

What if I run out of eSIM data abroad?

You can purchase an additional eSIM plan from e-sim.onl at any time. It installs in minutes over any internet connection, including hotel Wi-Fi.

Does TravelPass work with Verizon prepaid plans?

TravelPass is generally available only on Verizon postpaid plans. If you are on a prepaid plan, an eSIM is your most practical international data option.
