Using Uber & Rideshare Apps Abroad with eSIM

Quick Answer

Rideshare apps work abroad with an eSIM data connection — no special setup needed beyond having data and a payment method. Uber works in 70+ countries, Grab dominates Southeast Asia, Bolt covers Europe and Africa, DiDi runs in China and Latin America, and InDriver operates in 40+ countries. Each ride uses 5-15 MB of data. A 3 GB eSIM plan supports hundreds of rides alongside normal travel usage.

Which Rideshare Apps Work in Which Countries?

The biggest mistake travelers make is assuming Uber works everywhere. It does not. Here is what to download before your trip:

Regional Breakdown

Europe: Uber + Bolt in most cities. FreeNow in Germany, Spain, UK. Bolt is often cheaper. Uber is banned or restricted in some cities (Barcelona taxi service only, parts of Germany).

Southeast Asia: Grab is the primary app. Uber exited SEA in 2018. Download Grab before arrival — it also handles food delivery and payments.

China: DiDi is the only major option. Uber sold its China business to DiDi in 2016. DiDi requires a Chinese phone number for registration, but the international DiDi app works with foreign numbers and cards.

Middle East: Uber and Careem (Uber-owned) both operate. Careem often has more drivers in smaller cities. In Saudi Arabia, Careem is dominant.

Latin America: Uber + DiDi + InDriver overlap in most countries. InDriver lets you bid on fares, which can be cheaper. DiDi is aggressive on pricing in Mexico and Brazil.

Africa: Bolt + Uber in major cities (Lagos, Nairobi, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Cairo). Bolt often has better coverage in smaller African cities.

India: Uber + Ola. Both work well in major cities.

How Much Data Does a Rideshare Ride Use?

Rideshare apps use surprisingly little data per trip:

This means:

You will never run out of data from rideshare use alone. The rest of your data goes to navigation, messaging, social media, and other apps.

How to Set Up Rideshare Apps Before Your Trip

Do all of this before you leave home, on WiFi:

1. Download the Right Apps

Check the table above for your destination and download the relevant apps. Create accounts and verify your phone number while you still have your home cellular service. Many apps send an SMS verification code during signup.

2. Add Payment Methods

Important: Some apps require a local payment method in certain countries. DiDi in China works best with Alipay or WeChat Pay linked. Grab in some SEA countries prefers local payment options but accepts international Visa/Mastercard.

3. Set Your Home Address to Your Hotel

After arriving, update your saved addresses in each app with your hotel or accommodation address. This makes it easy to request rides “home” without typing the address each time.

4. Download Offline Maps

If your eSIM data runs out or you hit a coverage gap, offline Google Maps can still show your location via GPS (GPS works without data). You can show the driver your destination on the offline map.

What If I Don’t Have Data During a Ride?

GPS on your phone works without cellular data or WiFi — it uses satellite signals. So even without data, your phone can show your location on downloaded offline maps.

However, rideshare apps require an active data connection to:

• Request a ride
• Match with a driver
• Track the driver’s arrival
• Process payment

If you lose data mid-ride: The ride continues normally. The driver has their own data connection and navigation. Your ride will be charged normally once your phone reconnects.

If you cannot get data to request a ride: Use hotel WiFi to request a pickup, hail a taxi manually, or ask hotel staff to call a taxi.

Country-Specific Rideshare Tips

Thailand

• Primary app: Grab

Japan

• Primary apps: Uber (limited), S.RIDE, GO Taxi
• Uber works in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto but with limited drivers
• Japanese taxis are clean, safe, and metered — hailing one is often easier than using an app

• Get a Japan eSIM

Europe (Western)

• Primary apps: Uber, Bolt, FreeNow
• Bolt is consistently 10-30% cheaper than Uber in cities where both operate

Can I Use My Home Uber Account Abroad?

Yes. Your Uber account works globally. Open Uber in any supported city and it automatically shows local drivers. Your payment methods carry over. There is nothing to reconfigure.

The same applies to Bolt, Grab, and most other international rideshare apps. One account works across all countries where the app operates.

Exception: Some apps require separate accounts for different regions. DiDi China and DiDi international are technically different apps. Yandex Go requires a Russian phone number.

What Are the Offline Alternatives When I Have No Data?

Pro tip: Write your hotel’s address in the local language on a card or phone note. Show it to taxi drivers who do not speak English. In countries with non-Latin scripts (China, Japan, Thailand, Korea, Arabic countries), this is essential.

Battery and Data Saving Tips for Rideshare Use

Rideshare apps drain battery because they use GPS, cellular data, and screen simultaneously.

• Close other apps while waiting for your driver
• Reduce screen brightness while tracking
• Carry a power bank — a 10,000 mAh bank provides 2-3 full phone charges
• Use WiFi at your hotel to request rides from your accommodation
• Disable background app refresh for apps you are not actively using
