Best eSIM for Taiwan 2026: Plans & Coverage
Compare eSIM plans for Taiwan in 2026. Coverage on Chunghwa, FarEasTone, and Taiwan Mobile networks across Taipei, Taroko Gorge, and Sun Moon Lake.
Quick Answer
A 5 GB / 30-day Taiwan eSIM plan at around $11–15 covers most 1–2 week trips. Plans on the Chunghwa Telecom network deliver the widest coverage, including mountain highways and remote scenic areas. Taiwan’s compact size and excellent infrastructure mean you’ll have reliable 4G LTE almost everywhere — install your eSIM before boarding and connect the moment you land at Taoyuan or Songshan.

Why Use an eSIM in Taiwan?
Taiwan is a tech-forward destination, but buying a physical SIM at the airport still means queuing at a telecom counter after a long flight. Taoyuan Airport SIM counters can have 30–45 minute waits during peak arrivals.
An eSIM eliminates that friction:
- Connect immediately at arrival — skip the airport SIM queue entirely
- Keep your home number active — dual SIM means you receive texts and calls on your primary line
- No SIM card to lose — important when you’re swapping between night markets and hotel safes
- Top up instantly if you burn through data streaming at a hot spring resort
Which Mobile Networks Does a Taiwan eSIM Use?
Taiwan has three major carriers. Your eSIM’s underlying network determines coverage quality in rural and mountainous areas:
| Network | Coverage | 5G | Speed | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chunghwa Telecom | Best nationwide, including mountains | Yes (expanding) | Fast | Largest network, best rural/highway coverage |
| FarEasTone (FET) | Excellent in cities, good rural | Yes | Fast | Strong in Taipei, Taichung, Kaohsiung |
| Taiwan Mobile | Excellent in cities, good rural | Yes | Fast | Competitive urban coverage, growing rural |
Most travel eSIM providers route through Chunghwa Telecom or FarEasTone. Both deliver reliable 4G LTE across the island. Chunghwa has the edge for mountainous areas like Alishan, Taroko Gorge, and the Central Cross-Island Highway.
Key point: If your itinerary includes anything beyond Taipei and Kaohsiung, prioritize an eSIM on Chunghwa Telecom’s network.
How Much Does a Taiwan eSIM Cost?
Here’s what you’ll typically pay for Taiwan eSIM plans:
| Data | Validity | Price |
|---|---|---|
| 1 GB | 7 days | $4–6 |
| 3 GB | 15 days | $7–11 |
| 5 GB | 30 days | $11–15 |
| 10 GB | 30 days | $16–24 |
| 20 GB | 30 days | $26–38 |
| Unlimited | 7 days | $15–25 |
How Do Prices Compare to Airport SIM Cards?
| Option | 5 GB equivalent | Convenience |
|---|---|---|
| e-sim.onl eSIM | ~$11–15 | Install before departure, instant activation |
| Airport SIM (Chunghwa) | ~$10–15 (unlimited/5 days) | Queue at counter, passport required |
| Airport SIM (FarEasTone) | ~$10–14 (unlimited/5 days) | Queue at counter, limited hours |
| Pocket Wi-Fi rental | ~$4–6/day | Pickup/return, carry extra device |
The pricing is comparable, but the eSIM saves you 30–60 minutes at arrival and doesn’t require returning anything.
How Much Data Do You Need in Taiwan?
Taiwan is a navigation-heavy destination. You’ll rely on Google Maps constantly — the address system is logical but signage can be challenging for non-Mandarin readers.

Coverage in Key Taiwan Destinations
Taipei and New Taipei City
Coverage is excellent across all three carriers. You’ll have strong 4G LTE (and 5G in many areas) throughout:
- Taipei MRT — full coverage on all lines, including underground sections. Taiwan’s MRT system has cell repeaters throughout tunnels
- Night markets — Shilin, Raohe, Ningxia all have excellent coverage despite the crowds
- Yangmingshan National Park — good coverage on main roads and popular trails; spotty on remote hiking paths
- Jiufen and Shifen — reliable coverage in the towns; occasional drops on mountain roads between them
Taroko Gorge (Hualien)
This is where network choice matters. The gorge’s deep marble canyon walls can block signals:
- Main road (Central Cross-Island Highway) — Chunghwa Telecom has the best coverage, with 4G along most of the route
- Shakadang and Baiyang trails — intermittent coverage; expect dead zones inside tunnels and deep canyon sections
- Tianxiang area — reliable coverage from Chunghwa, spotty from others
- Tip: Download offline maps before entering the gorge
Sun Moon Lake
Coverage is good around the lake’s main visitor areas:
- Shuishe Village and Ita Thao — strong signal, all carriers
- Cycling path around the lake — mostly covered, brief drops in forested hillside sections
- Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village — good coverage
- Tip: The lakeside cycling path is one of Taiwan’s most popular activities — your eSIM will handle navigation and photo sharing without issues
Alishan National Scenic Area
Mountain coverage is more limited:
- Alishan village and train station — good coverage
- Sunrise viewing area (Zhushan) — intermittent
- Giant Trees Trail — spotty, dense forest limits signal
- Chunghwa Telecom performs best here; other carriers may have significant gaps
Kaohsiung and Kenting
- Kaohsiung city — excellent across all carriers, including the MRT
- Kenting National Park — good coverage in the main town and beaches, weaker on remote southern trails
Can You Use VoIP and Messaging Apps in Taiwan?
Yes. Taiwan has no restrictions on VoIP services. All major platforms work without issues:
- LINE — this is essential in Taiwan. It’s the dominant messaging app, used by businesses, restaurants, and for mobile payments. Download it before your trip
- WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram — all work normally
- Google Voice, Skype — no restrictions
Most travel eSIMs, including those from e-sim.onl, are data-only. You won’t get a Taiwanese phone number, but LINE and WhatsApp handle all communication needs.
Tips for Using an eSIM in Taiwan
- Install LINE before you arrive — many restaurants have LINE-only reservation systems, and it’s used for everything from restaurant queues to customer service
- Download offline maps of Taroko Gorge and mountain areas — coverage gaps exist in canyons and forests
- Use EasyCard or iPASS for transit — your phone handles navigation, but transit payment is still card-based (Apple Pay works on some routes)
- Taiwan uses 4G LTE widely — 5G is expanding but you’ll have a great experience on 4G across the island
- Night market crowds don’t affect speed — Taiwan’s networks handle density well, even at Shilin Night Market’s peak hours
