Best eSIM for India 2026: Data Plans & Setup
Find the best eSIM for India in 2026. Compare plans, prices, networks (Jio, Airtel, Vi), and get coverage tips for Delhi, Rajasthan, Kerala & the Himalayas.
Quick Answer
For most travelers visiting India in 2026, a 5 GB / 30-day eSIM plan at $14.99 is sufficient for a 1–2 week trip. India eSIM plans typically connect to Airtel or Jio, which together cover the vast majority of the country. An eSIM is strongly recommended over a local SIM — India’s physical SIM registration process is notoriously complex and time-consuming for tourists. Buy your eSIM before departure and connect immediately at Delhi, Mumbai, or Bangalore airport.

Why Use an eSIM in India?
India has one of the most complicated SIM registration processes in the world. Buying a local prepaid SIM requires:
- Passport copy and visa copy
- Local reference (sometimes a hotel address suffices, sometimes not)
- Biometric verification at a carrier store
- 24–72 hour activation wait — your SIM won’t work immediately
- Some carriers reject tourist applications or make the process difficult
This means you could land in Delhi and spend your first 1–3 days without reliable mobile data. An eSIM eliminates all of this:
- Install before you land — connect instantly at the airport
- No registration — no passport copies, no biometrics, no activation wait
- No carrier store visits — avoid the frustrating bureaucracy
- No SIM swap — keep your home number active for calls and texts
- Instant top-up if you need more data
For India specifically, the convenience gap between eSIM and physical SIM is larger than almost any other destination.
Which Mobile Networks Does an India eSIM Use?
India has three major carriers covering a massive and diverse country:
| Network | 4G Coverage | 5G Coverage | Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jio (Reliance) | 98%+ population | 700+ cities (expanding fast) | Newest network, aggressive 5G rollout, best in metros | Weaker in remote northeast and mountainous regions |
| Airtel | 97% population | 500+ cities | Strong overall coverage, reliable in tourist areas | Slightly behind Jio in 5G expansion |
| Vi (Vodafone Idea) | 90% population | Limited | Third option | Financial struggles, network investment lagging |
Most travel eSIM providers for India route through Airtel or Jio. Both are strong choices. Jio has the edge for 5G speeds in major cities; Airtel has historically better coverage in some rural and mountainous areas.
Key point: India is a massive country (3.3 million km2) with extreme geographic diversity — from Himalayan mountains to Rajasthani deserts to Kerala backwaters. No carrier covers every corner perfectly. In remote areas (Ladakh, parts of northeast India, deep Rajasthani desert), coverage from any carrier can be limited.
How Much Does an India eSIM Cost?
Here’s what you’ll pay for India-specific eSIM plans on e-sim.onl:
| Data | Validity | Price |
|---|---|---|
| 1 GB | 7 days | $4.99 |
| 3 GB | 15 days | $9.99 |
| 5 GB | 30 days | $14.99 |
| 10 GB | 30 days | $19.99 |
| 20 GB | 30 days | $34.99 |
How Do These Prices Compare to Other Providers?
| Provider | 5 GB / 30 days | 10 GB / 30 days |
|---|---|---|
| e-sim.onl | $14.99 | $19.99 |
| Airalo | $15.00 | $22.00 |
| Saily | $14.99 | $22.99 |
| Holafly (unlimited/5 days) | $19.00 | N/A (daily pricing) |
| GigSky | $24.99 | $34.99 |
Note on local SIM pricing: India has some of the cheapest mobile data in the world. A local Jio SIM costs as little as $3–5 for 30 GB. But the registration process (24–72 hours, biometrics, paperwork) makes it impractical for most tourists. The premium you pay for an eSIM buys you instant connectivity and zero hassle.
How Much Data Do You Need in India?
India is a destination where you’ll rely heavily on your phone for navigation, translation, ride-hailing, and payments.
Typical Daily Data Usage in India

| Google Translate | 5–15 MB | 20–40 MB |
| Ride-hailing (Uber, Ola) | 5–10 MB | 20–50 MB |
| Social media (Instagram, WhatsApp) | 100–300 MB | 200–500 MB |
| Messaging (WhatsApp) | 1–5 MB | 10–30 MB |
| Browsing & email | 30–60 MB | 100–200 MB |
Recommended Plans by Trip Type
| Trip type | Duration | Recommended data | Plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delhi + Agra (Golden Triangle start) | 5–7 days | 3 GB | 3 GB / 15 days — $9.99 |
| Golden Triangle (Delhi + Agra + Jaipur) | 10–14 days | 5 GB | 5 GB / 30 days — $14.99 |
| Extended tour (+ Kerala, Goa, Varanasi) | 14–21 days | 10 GB | 10 GB / 30 days — $19.99 |
| Full India trip / digital nomad | 30 days | 20 GB | 20 GB / 30 days — $34.99 |
Tip: India has free Wi-Fi at many hotels, cafes, and some public spaces (Google Station Wi-Fi at train stations). But quality varies wildly — hotel Wi-Fi can be very slow. Your eSIM data will be your most reliable connection.
Is 5G Available in India for eSIM Users?
Yes. India’s 5G rollout, led by Jio and Airtel, has been one of the fastest in the world:
- Delhi/NCR: Widespread 5G across the city, airports, and major landmarks
- Mumbai: Strong 5G coverage across the city
- Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai: Good 5G in urban centers and tech corridors
- Jaipur, Kolkata, Ahmedabad: 5G available in city centers
- Tourist cities (Agra, Varanasi, Udaipur): Variable — some have 5G, others rely on strong 4G
- Rural India: 4G LTE, which is typically 10–30 Mbps
Your phone must support Indian 5G bands (n78, n258) to connect. Check your device in our eSIM compatible phones guide.

Rajasthan: Connectivity Guide
Rajasthan is India’s most popular tourist state. Here’s what to expect:
| Location | Coverage | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Jaipur | Excellent (4G/5G) | Full coverage in the city, including Amber Fort and Hawa Mahal |
| Udaipur | Good (4G) | City and lake areas well covered |
| Jodhpur | Good (4G) | Mehrangarh Fort and city center covered |
| Jaisalmer | Good in town (4G) | Desert camps (Sam Sand Dunes) have weak or no signal |
| Pushkar | Good (4G) | Small town but well covered |
| Desert areas between cities | Fair to poor | Long stretches with weak or no signal on highways |
Desert safari tip: If you’re doing an overnight camel safari or camping in the Thar Desert, expect no signal. Download offline entertainment and inform people you’ll be unreachable.
Kerala: Connectivity Guide
| Location | Coverage | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Kochi | Excellent (4G/5G) | Full coverage including Fort Kochi |

| Thekkady/Periyar | Fair (4G) | Town covered; wildlife sanctuary has gaps |
| Varkala/Kovalam beaches | Good (4G) | Beach areas covered |
Himalayas: Connectivity Guide
This is where India’s coverage gets challenging:
| Location | Coverage | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Shimla, Manali | Good (4G) | Tourist towns well covered |
| Dharamsala/McLeodganj | Good (4G) | Town covered |
| Leh (Ladakh) | Fair (4G) | Town covered; highway to Manali has long dead zones |
| Rishikesh | Good (4G) | Town and ashram areas covered |
| Spiti Valley | Poor to none | Very limited coverage; expect days without signal |
| Trekking routes (Everest BC, Annapurna) | None | These are in Nepal, not India — different eSIM needed |
Himalayan tip: If you’re heading to Ladakh or Spiti Valley, download everything offline before leaving the last major town. These areas have stretches of 6–12 hours without any mobile signal.
Connectivity in Specific Locations

Save Data in India
- Use hotel Wi-Fi for video calls and uploads (quality varies)
- Download offline maps — India’s cities are large and navigation-intensive
- Download content before visiting rural areas
- WhatsApp voice/video calls use less data than regular VoIP
- Set social media to not auto-play videos
India eSIM vs. Local SIM: Detailed Comparison
| Factor | eSIM (e-sim.onl) | Local SIM (Jio/Airtel) |
|---|---|---|
| Price (5 GB / 30 days) | $14.99 | ~$3–5 (much cheaper) |
| Activation time | Instant | 24–72 hours |
| Registration required | No | Yes (passport, visa, biometrics, photo) |
| Available at airport | Pre-installed | Counter at major airports only |
| Success rate for tourists | 100% | Variable (sometimes rejected) |
| Hassle level | None | High |
| Top-up ease | Online, instant | Recharge at shops or apps |
| Works on arrival | Yes | No (activation delay) |
The verdict: Local SIMs are dramatically cheaper but come with a 1–3 day activation delay and significant bureaucratic hassle. For trips under 3 weeks, the eSIM premium is worth it for instant connectivity. For long-term stays (1+ months), you may want both — an eSIM for immediate use and a local SIM activated after a few days for cheaper data.
Frequently Asked Questions About India eSIMs
Is it true I can’t get a local SIM easily as a tourist in India?
It’s not impossible, but it’s difficult and slow. India requires biometric verification, passport copies, visa copies, and a local reference. Activation takes 24–72 hours. Some carrier shops refuse tourists or make errors that cause further delays. An eSIM avoids all of this.
Will my eSIM work in Ladakh?
In Leh town, yes — Airtel and Jio have 4G coverage. On the highways between Manali and Leh or Srinagar and Leh, expect long stretches (hours) without any signal. Remote areas like Pangong Lake have very limited coverage.
Can I use VPNs with my India eSIM?
Yes. Some websites and apps are occasionally blocked in India (mostly for political/security reasons). A VPN works normally over your eSIM data connection.
Will my eSIM work in Kashmir?
Coverage in Srinagar and major Kashmir cities is good (4G). However, India periodically restricts internet access in Jammu & Kashmir for security reasons. During these shutdowns, neither local SIMs nor eSIMs will have data access. Check current conditions before traveling.
Can I top up my India eSIM if I run out of data?
Yes. On e-sim.onl, you can purchase an additional plan and add it to your device.
Does tethering/hotspot work with an India eSIM?
It depends on the plan. Many e-sim.onl plans support tethering, allowing you to share your connection with a laptop or tablet.
