Best eSIM for Greece 2026: Islands & Mainland Coverage

Quick Answer

A 5 GB / 30-day eSIM plan at $14.99 covers most trips to Greece, including island-hopping. Greece eSIM plans connect to Cosmote or Vodafone GR, both of which deliver strong coverage across the mainland, major islands, and ferry routes between them. Install your eSIM before departure and connect the moment you land at Athens, Thessaloniki, or any island airport.

Why Use an eSIM in Greece?

Greece is a destination where reliable mobile data transforms your trip. You need Google Maps for navigating Athens’s tangled streets, ferry booking apps for island-hopping, and real-time schedule updates when connections change.

Buying a physical SIM in Greece requires visiting a Cosmote or Vodafone shop with your passport. In Athens, these shops are busy. On the islands, they may not exist at all or keep limited hours during shoulder season.

An eSIM solves all of this:

• Install before you land — no shop visits, no passport registration
• No physical SIM swap — keep your home number for calls and two-factor authentication
• Works instantly — connect at Athens International (ATH) the second you touch down
• Multi-country option — many plans also cover Turkey, Italy, and other EU countries for multi-stop Mediterranean trips
• Top up remotely if you run low while on a remote island

Which Mobile Networks Does a Greece eSIM Use?

Greece has three mobile networks:

Most travel eSIM plans for Greece route through Cosmote or Vodafone GR. Cosmote is the gold standard — it is owned by Deutsche Telekom and has the most comprehensive network, including cell towers on smaller islands that other carriers skip.

How Much Data Do You Need in Greece?

Typical Daily Data Usage in Greece

Recommended Plans by Trip Type

Tip: Free Wi-Fi is available at most Greek hotels, tavernas, and cafes, but it is often slow and unreliable. Your eSIM data is more dependable for anything beyond basic browsing, especially on the islands.

Island Coverage: Does eSIM Work on Greek Islands?

This is the question most travelers ask. The answer: yes, on all major islands and most smaller ones.

Coverage by Island Group

What About Very Small Islands?

Islands with fewer than 1,000 residents may have limited coverage. Cosmote generally reaches further than Vodafone on these tiny islands. If you are heading to very remote destinations like Anafi, Donoussa, or Kastellorizo, expect 3G in the port town and possible dead zones elsewhere.

Does eSIM Work on Greek Ferries?

Greek ferries are a central part of island-hopping, and connectivity varies:

Practical advice: Download offline maps and your ferry e-ticket before boarding. You will have connectivity near ports on either end but may lose signal for stretches in the open Aegean. Blue Star Ferries and some SeaJets boats offer paid onboard Wi-Fi, but it is slow and overpriced compared to waiting for your eSIM to reconnect.

Athens Connectivity Tips

Athens has excellent mobile coverage. Here is what to know:

• Athens Metro: Full 4G coverage in stations and between stations on all three lines
• Athens International Airport (ATH): Strong 4G/5G; your eSIM activates immediately after landing
• Acropolis and Plaka: Full coverage, though crowds can slow speeds during peak hours
• Piraeus port: Full coverage; connect and download maps before boarding your ferry
• Suburban areas (Vouliagmeni, Sounion): Full 4G coverage along the Athens Riviera

Download These Apps Before You Go

• Google Maps — Download offline maps for Athens, your islands, and ferry ports
• FerryHopper — Real-time ferry schedules and booking. Essential for island-hopping.
• KTEL Bus — Long-distance bus schedules for mainland Greece
• Google Translate — Download the Greek language pack. Camera translation helps with menus and signs.
• WhatsApp — Widely used in Greece for restaurant reservations and tour bookings

Greece eSIM vs. Local SIM vs. EU Roaming

For US/Canadian visitors: Your carrier’s international day-pass ($10–12/day) adds up fast. A $14.99 eSIM for a two-week island-hopping trip saves $125–155.

For UK visitors: Post-Brexit EU roaming charges apply with many UK carriers. Check your plan or grab a Greece eSIM.

For Australian visitors: Telstra/Optus international roaming is expensive. eSIM is the clear winner.

Frequently Asked Questions About Greece eSIMs

Will my eSIM work on Santorini?

Yes. Santorini has excellent Cosmote and Vodafone coverage across the entire island, including Fira, Oia, Kamari, and the volcanic beaches. You will have full 4G and often 5G connectivity.

Can I use my Greece eSIM in Turkey?

Greece and Turkey are separate countries with different networks. A Greece-only eSIM will not work in Turkey. If you are visiting both, consider a multi-country Europe plan or buy separate plans for each country at e-sim.onl/esim/turkey/.

Is there 5G in Greece?

Yes, but primarily in Athens and Thessaloniki. Cosmote has the broadest 5G footprint. On the islands, expect 4G LTE, which typically delivers 20–50 Mbps — more than enough for navigation, streaming, and video calls.

How do I stay connected during an island-hopping trip?

Install your eSIM before departure with enough data for the full trip. A 10 GB plan covers most two-week island-hopping itineraries. Your eSIM automatically reconnects to the local cell tower each time you reach a new island.

Can I top up my Greece eSIM if I run out of data?

Yes. On e-sim.onl, you can purchase an additional plan and add it to your device from anywhere.
