Best eSIM for Brazil 2026: Plans for Tourists
Compare eSIM plans for Brazil. Coverage in Rio, Sao Paulo, Amazon, and beach towns. Network details, Carnival tips, pricing, and data plan recommendations.
Quick answer
For Brazil, choose an eSIM on Claro or Vivo’s network — both have the widest 4G coverage across this enormous country. A 5 GB / 30-day Brazil eSIM costs $6–15 USD. Coverage in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, and major cities is excellent. The Amazon region, interior backroads, and remote beach towns have significant gaps. Brazil is affordable for eSIMs and well suited for data-only plans since WhatsApp is the primary communication tool.

Which networks do eSIMs use in Brazil?
Brazil has three major networks and one growing competitor:
| Network | 4G population coverage | 5G cities (2026) | Geographic coverage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claro (América Móvil) | 95%+ | Sao Paulo, Rio, Brasilia, Belo Horizonte, Salvador, Curitiba | Largest coverage footprint | Best overall for travelers |
| Vivo (Telefônica) | 95%+ | Sao Paulo, Rio, Brasilia, Belo Horizonte, Porto Alegre, Recife | Very similar to Claro | Excellent alternative |
| TIM (Telecom Italia) | 90%+ | Sao Paulo, Rio, Brasilia | Third largest — strong in cities, weaker in interior | Budget option |
| Oi (in restructuring) | 70%+ | Limited | Declining coverage | Avoid if possible |
Claro and Vivo are neck and neck for travelers. Both cover major highways, tourist cities, and coastal areas well. TIM is a solid third choice that works fine for city-only trips. Oi has been restructuring and selling off infrastructure — it’s the weakest option.
Most travel eSIM plans connect to Claro or Vivo.
How much does an eSIM for Brazil cost?

| 20 GB | 30 days | $18–38 |
| Unlimited | 7 days | $12–22 |

How is coverage in Rio de Janeiro?
Rio has excellent coverage across all tourist areas:
| Area | Coverage | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Copacabana / Ipanema / Leblon | Excellent | Full 4G/5G along the beaches and surrounding streets |
| Christ the Redeemer (Corcovado) | Good | Signal at the summit and on the train up |
| Sugarloaf Mountain | Good | Signal at both cable car stations and summit |
| Santa Teresa | Very good | Some narrow streets may weaken signal slightly |
| Lapa / Centro | Excellent | Dense urban coverage |
| Barra da Tijuca | Excellent | Modern area with strong infrastructure |
| Niteroi | Very good | Including the MAC museum area |
| Tijuca Forest trails | Patchy | Signal fades on deeper trails |
Carnival tip: During Carnival (February/March), cell networks in Rio become heavily congested, especially along the Sambadrome and in blocos street parties. Expect slower speeds and occasional connection drops during peak hours. Pre-download maps and meeting points. A larger data plan helps since you’ll retry more uploads.
How is coverage in Sao Paulo?
Sao Paulo is Brazil’s tech and business hub with the country’s best infrastructure:
| Area | Coverage | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Paulista Avenue / Jardins | Excellent | 5G widely available |
| Vila Madalena / Pinheiros | Excellent | Strong 4G/5G |
| Liberdade / Centro | Excellent | Dense coverage |
| Ibirapuera Park | Very good | Signal throughout the park |
| GRU Airport (Guarulhos) | Excellent | Full coverage; free Wi-Fi also available |
| Congonhas Airport | Excellent | Full coverage |
Sao Paulo rarely has connectivity issues. It’s comparable to major European cities for mobile coverage quality and speeds. Digital nomads based in Sao Paulo can rely on mobile data as a backup connection.
How is coverage in popular tourist destinations?
| Destination | State | Coverage quality | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Salvador | Bahia | Excellent | Pelourinho, beaches, and Barra all covered |
| Florianopolis | Santa Catarina | Very good | Main beaches covered; remote southern beaches weaker |
| Foz do Iguacu | Parana | Very good | Signal at the falls walkways and town |
| Buzios | Rio de Janeiro | Good | Town and main beaches covered; remote beaches patchy |
| Paraty | Rio de Janeiro | Good | Historic center covered; surrounding nature weaker |
| Jericoacoara | Ceara | Moderate | Town has signal; surrounding dunes limited |
| Fernando de Noronha | Pernambuco | Moderate | Main village has coverage; some beaches have gaps |
| Lencois Maranhenses | Maranhao | Limited | Barreirinhas town has signal; dunes have none |
| Bonito | Mato Grosso do Sul | Good in town | Signal in town; many cave/river excursion sites have none |
| Chapada Diamantina | Bahia | Limited | Signal in Lencois town; trails and waterfalls mostly no coverage |
| Alter do Chao | Para | Moderate | Basic coverage in town; river areas no signal |
How is coverage in the Amazon?
The Amazon is one of the world’s least connected regions. Here’s what to expect:
| Area | Coverage | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Manaus city | Very good | Full 4G in the city, 5G in some areas |
| Manaus airport | Good | Coverage and Wi-Fi available |
| Amazon lodge (near Manaus, under 100 km) | Limited | Some lodges have satellite Wi-Fi; cell signal weak or none |
| Amazon lodge (remote, over 100 km) | None | No cell coverage; lodges may have satellite internet |
| River boats (Manaus to Belem route) | Very limited | Occasional signal near riverside towns; days without coverage |
| Alter do Chao | Moderate | Basic coverage in the village |
Amazon tip: If you’re doing a multi-day jungle lodge stay or river trip, assume zero cell coverage for the duration. Download everything you need before leaving Manaus. Let contacts know you’ll be unreachable. Some premium lodges offer (slow) satellite Wi-Fi for basic messaging.
How is coverage on Brazil’s beaches?
Brazil’s coastline stretches over 7,400 km. Coverage varies enormously:
| Beach region | Coverage quality | Notable spots |
|---|---|---|
| Rio beaches (Copacabana, Ipanema) | Excellent | No issues |
| Bahia coast (Salvador to Porto Seguro) | Good in resort towns | Gaps between towns |
| Northeast coast (Natal, Recife, Fortaleza) | Good in cities | Weaker in small fishing villages |
| Santa Catarina coast (Florianopolis) | Very good | Most beaches covered |
| Southern Bahia (Itacare, Trancoso) | Moderate | Town centers covered; remote beaches weaker |
| Maranhao coast (Lencois Maranhenses) | Limited | Barreirinhas has signal; beach/dune areas do not |
| Para coast (Algodoal, Marajo) | Limited | Basic coverage in main towns only |
General pattern: Established resort towns and cities have good coverage. The more remote and undeveloped the beach, the weaker the signal. This is part of the charm of places like Jericoacoara and Trancoso, but plan accordingly.
How much data do I need for Brazil?
| Usage pattern | Daily data | 7-day trip | 14-day trip | 30-day trip |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light (maps, WhatsApp) | 300–500 MB | 3 GB | 5 GB | 10 GB |
| Moderate (social media, photos) | 500 MB–1 GB | 5 GB | 10 GB | 20 GB |
| Heavy (video calls, streaming) | 1–3 GB | 10 GB | 20 GB | 30 GB+ |
| Carnival in Rio | 1–2 GB | 10 GB | — | — |
WhatsApp is essential in Brazil. Restaurants send menus via WhatsApp, tour operators communicate through it, and it’s the default for any local coordination. Budget for at least enough data to keep WhatsApp running at all times.
During Carnival, you’ll use more data than usual — photo/video uploads, coordinating with friends in crowds, and re-loading maps when networks are congested.
How is 5G in Brazilian cities?
5G deployment is advancing in Brazil’s major metros:
| City | 5G availability (2026) | Typical 5G speeds |
|---|---|---|
| Sao Paulo | Widespread (Paulista, Pinheiros, Faria Lima, airport) | 150–500 Mbps |
| Rio de Janeiro | Good (Copacabana, Botafogo, Centro, Barra) | 100–400 Mbps |
| Brasilia | Good (Plano Piloto, Asa Sul/Norte) | 100–400 Mbps |
| Belo Horizonte | Moderate (Savassi, city center) | 100–300 Mbps |
| Salvador | Moderate (Barra, Pelourinho) | 100–300 Mbps |
| Curitiba | Moderate (city center) | 100–300 Mbps |
| Porto Alegre | Moderate (Moinhos de Vento, city center) | 100–300 Mbps |
| Recife | Moderate (Boa Viagem, city center) | 100–300 Mbps |
Not all travel eSIM plans include 5G access. Standard 4G in Brazilian cities (20–60 Mbps) is sufficient for all travel needs.
Tips for staying connected in Brazil
- Install WhatsApp before you go. It’s used for everything in Brazil — restaurant reservations, tour bookings, ride coordination, and messaging locals.
- Choose a Claro or Vivo network plan for the widest coverage, especially if traveling beyond major cities.
- Download offline maps for road trips and nature destinations. Google Maps and maps.me both work offline.
- Buy a longer plan than you think you need. Brazil is big and trips often extend. A 30-day plan gives flexibility.
- Expect congestion during events. Carnival, New Year’s Eve on Copacabana, and major football matches all strain cell networks. Have offline backups for navigation and meeting points.
- Airport Wi-Fi is free at GRU (Sao Paulo), GIG (Rio), and most major airports. Use it to set up your eSIM if you didn’t activate before landing.
