How Do Airalo, Holafly, and e-sim.onl Compare?

Here is a high-level comparison of all three providers:

Let’s break each provider down in detail.

What Is Airalo and How Does It Work?

Airalo launched in 2019 and is one of the most recognized eSIM providers. It operates as a marketplace, aggregating eSIM plans from multiple wholesale providers and reselling them through its app.

Airalo Strengths

• Brand recognition. Airalo has strong marketing and a large user base. Lots of reviews and travel blog recommendations.
• 137 countries. Covers most popular travel destinations.
• Fixed data plans. You know exactly how much data you get. No surprises.
• Regional plans. Offers multi-country plans for Europe, Asia, and other regions.

Airalo Weaknesses

• App-first experience. You need to download the Airalo app to purchase and manage eSIMs. This adds friction compared to a web-based purchase.
• No eSIM reuse. Each purchase creates a new eSIM profile. If you buy a second plan for the same country, you install a new eSIM rather than topping up the existing one. This clutters your phone’s eSIM list.
• Middleman markup. Airalo sources from wholesale aggregators and adds its own margin. You are paying for multiple layers between you and the local carrier.
• Fewer countries. 137 countries is solid but misses some destinations, particularly in Africa and the Pacific.

What Is Holafly and How Does It Work?

Holafly positions itself as a premium eSIM provider with an “unlimited data” selling point. It offers daily-rate unlimited plans for 60+ countries.

Holafly Strengths

• Unlimited data marketing. For travelers anxious about running out of data, the word “unlimited” provides peace of mind.
• Simple pricing. Pay per day, know your total cost upfront.
• Good for heavy users on paper. If you genuinely use 3+ GB per day and the speeds remain acceptable, the unlimited model can work out.

Holafly Weaknesses

• Throttling. This is the big one. Holafly’s “unlimited” plans come with a fair-use policy. After approximately 1-2 GB of daily usage, speeds drop significantly — often to 256-512 Kbps. At those speeds, Google Maps loads slowly, images take seconds, and video calls are unusable. The “unlimited” label is technically accurate but practically misleading.
• Premium pricing. Holafly’s plans start at $6/day. A two-week trip costs $47-$57 for the plan alone. For comparison, a 5 GB fixed plan at e-sim.onl costs $14.99 and covers most travelers for two weeks without throttling.
• Fewer countries. Only 60+ countries, which is the smallest coverage of the three providers compared here.
• No small plans. You cannot buy 1 GB for a quick weekend trip. The minimum is a multi-day unlimited plan.
• App required. Like Airalo, Holafly requires its app for purchasing and installation.

Holafly Pricing (Popular Destinations)

Note: Holafly uses flat pricing across most destinations. While this simplifies things, it means you overpay for cheaper regions and the throttling limit varies by country.

What Is e-sim.onl and How Does It Work?

e-sim.onl is a travel eSIM marketplace that partners directly with eSIM Access, a wholesale aggregation platform with direct carrier relationships in 175+ countries. This cuts out the middleman layer that other providers rely on.

e-sim.onl Strengths

• 175+ countries. The widest coverage of the three, including destinations in Africa, the Pacific, and Central Asia that others miss.
• Direct eSIM Access partnership. Plans come directly from local carrier agreements, not resold through intermediaries. This keeps prices lower.
• Transparent per-GB pricing. You know exactly what you are paying per gigabyte. No throttling, no fair-use surprises.
• Web-based. No app download required. Purchase on the website, receive a QR code by email, scan and go.
• No auto-renewal. Every plan is a one-time purchase. No subscriptions to cancel or forget about.
• No middleman markup. Fewer layers between you and the carrier means lower prices.

e-sim.onl Weaknesses

• Newer brand. Less brand recognition than Airalo or Holafly. Fewer reviews online (though this is changing as more travelers discover it).
• No app. Some travelers prefer an app for managing their eSIMs. e-sim.onl is web-first, which is simpler but less familiar to app-oriented users.
• Fixed data. No unlimited option. You need to estimate your data usage and buy accordingly (though this is arguably a strength, since fixed data means no throttling).

How Do Prices Compare for a Two-Week Trip?

Here is a direct cost comparison for a 14-day trip to popular destinations, assuming moderate data usage (3-5 GB total):

For a moderate traveler, e-sim.onl is consistently the cheapest option. Holafly costs 2-3x more for data that gets throttled after daily limits.

Is Holafly’s “Unlimited” Data Really Unlimited?

Technically yes, practically no. Here is what happens with Holafly’s unlimited plans:

1. First 1-2 GB of daily usage: Full speed (varies by country, typically 10-50 Mbps on 4G).
2. After the daily threshold: Speeds drop to 256-512 Kbps for the rest of the day.
3. Next day: Full speed resets.

At 256 Kbps:

• Google Maps loads slowly and may time out
• Images take 5-15 seconds to load
• Video calls are choppy or impossible
• Streaming video does not work
• Web pages load in 10-20 seconds

The throttling threshold is not published clearly and varies by destination. Some users report throttling after as little as 500 MB in a day. This makes it impossible to predict whether you will have usable speeds at any given moment.

For most travelers, a fixed 5 GB plan with full speed throughout is more useful than “unlimited” data at unusable speeds.

Which Provider Has the Best Coverage?

e-sim.onl’s eSIM Access partnership gives it the widest reach, particularly in Africa, Central Asia, and the Pacific — regions where Airalo and especially Holafly have limited options.

Which Provider Should I Choose?

Choose Airalo if:

• You prefer an app-based experience
• You are visiting one of their 137 covered countries
• You want a well-known brand with lots of online reviews
• You do not mind installing a new eSIM for each trip

Choose Holafly if:

• You consistently use more than 5 GB per day
• You are willing to pay a premium for the “unlimited” label
• Speed throttling after 1-2 GB/day does not concern you
• You are visiting one of their 60+ covered countries

Choose e-sim.onl if:

• You want the lowest per-GB price
• You are visiting a less common destination (Africa, Pacific, Central Asia)
• You prefer a web-based purchase without downloading an app
• You want transparent pricing with no throttling or hidden fees
• You want to avoid auto-renewals and subscriptions

For the majority of travelers visiting popular destinations, e-sim.onl provides the best combination of price, coverage, and transparency. The savings over Holafly are significant, and the coverage exceeds Airalo’s by 50+ countries.

Do Any of These Providers Offer eSIM Top-Ups?

If you run out of data with any provider, you can always purchase a new plan. The process takes a few minutes. Buy slightly more data than you think you need to avoid this situation — the cost difference between 3 GB and 5 GB is usually only $5.

What About Customer Support?

All three providers offer customer support, but response times and quality vary:

• Airalo: In-app chat and email. Response times are typically 1-12 hours. Large support team due to scale.
• Holafly: In-app chat and email. Similar response times to Airalo. Some users report difficulty getting refunds for throttled plans.
• e-sim.onl: Email support ([email protected]). Response times are typically under 6 hours. Smaller team but more direct assistance.

For setup issues, all three providers offer installation guides. e-sim.onl’s web-based approach means you can also access your eSIM details from any device via email, without needing an app.
