Which Thailand Mobile Networks Do eSIMs Use?

Thailand has three major mobile operators. Each has distinct strengths:

AIS (Advanced Info Service)

AIS is Thailand’s largest carrier with the widest coverage footprint. It covers 98% of populated areas with 4G/LTE and has the most extensive 5G rollout in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Pattaya. AIS is the safest choice for travelers visiting multiple regions.

DTAC (Total Access Communication)

DTAC offers competitive pricing and solid coverage in urban areas. Its 4G network covers major tourist destinations reliably. DTAC merged operations with TrueMove H under the True Corporation umbrella in 2023, and network integration continues to improve coverage.

TrueMove H

TrueMove H provides strong urban coverage and competitive data speeds. After the merger with DTAC, the combined network infrastructure offers broader reach than either network had individually. TrueMove H has invested heavily in 5G deployment across Bangkok.

Is 5G Available for Tourists in Thailand?

Yes, but with caveats. Thailand’s 5G networks are concentrated in Bangkok, where all three carriers offer 5G service in central business districts, shopping areas, and transport hubs. Outside Bangkok, 5G is available in pockets of Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Pattaya.

For most tourists, 4G/LTE provides more than enough speed. Thailand’s 4G networks typically deliver 20-50 Mbps download speeds, which handles navigation, social media, video calls, and streaming without issues.

Your device must support 5G and the specific bands used in Thailand (n1, n28, n41) to connect to 5G networks. Check compatible devices before your trip.

How Much Data Do I Need for Thailand?

Data usage depends on your habits. Here are realistic estimates for common activities:

Light traveler (maps, messaging, ride-hailing): 300-500 MB/day = 1 GB plan for a short trip, 3 GB for two weeks.

Moderate traveler (above + social media, occasional calls): 500 MB-1 GB/day = 3-5 GB plan for one to two weeks.

Heavy user (streaming, hotspot, video calls): 1-2 GB/day = 10 GB plan for one to two weeks.

Does eSIM Coverage Work on Thai Islands?

Coverage on Thailand’s islands varies by island and network:

Good coverage (4G): Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Phuket, Koh Lanta, Koh Chang. These popular islands have reliable 4G from all three carriers.

Moderate coverage (3G/4G): Koh Tao, Koh Lipe, Koh Mak. Expect 3G in some areas and 4G near main towns. AIS generally provides the best coverage on smaller islands.

Limited coverage: Very remote islands and national marine parks may have spotty or no signal. Download offline maps in Google Maps before heading to remote areas.

If island-hopping is a major part of your trip, choose an eSIM plan that connects to the AIS network for the best coverage across smaller islands.

How Do I Set Up an eSIM for Thailand?

Setting up an eSIM takes about five minutes. Here is the process:

1. Check device compatibility. Your phone must support eSIM. Most iPhones from iPhone XS onward and many Android phones from 2020+ support eSIM. See the full list at compatible devices.

2. Purchase your plan. Buy a Thailand eSIM plan from e-sim.onl before or during your trip. You will receive a QR code by email instantly.

3. Install the eSIM. On iPhone: Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM > Use QR Code. On Android: Settings > Network > SIMs > Add eSIM. Scan the QR code.

4. Activate at the right time. Some plans start their validity period upon first data use, not upon installation. Install the eSIM before your flight and activate data after landing in Thailand.

5. Configure your lines. Set the Thailand eSIM as your data line. Keep your home SIM active for calls/texts if needed, or switch it to airplane mode to avoid roaming charges.

What Apps Should I Have for Thailand Travel?

These apps pair well with your Thailand eSIM:

• Grab — Ride-hailing and food delivery. The Uber equivalent in Southeast Asia.
• Google Maps — Reliable navigation. Download the Thailand offline map as backup.
• Google Translate — Supports Thai with camera translation for menus and signs.
• LINE — Thailand’s most popular messaging app. Many restaurants and businesses use LINE for orders and communication.
• Agoda — Hotel booking app popular in Thailand with competitive local rates.
• XE Currency — Real-time Thai Baht conversion rates.

All of these apps work well on 4G data and use minimal bandwidth except for Grab’s map features.

Can I Top Up or Extend My Thailand eSIM?

Yes. If you run out of data, you can purchase an additional eSIM plan from e-sim.onl and install it alongside your existing one. Some plans also support top-ups directly. Check the plan details before purchase.

It is worth buying slightly more data than you think you need. The price difference between 3 GB and 5 GB is only $5, and running out of data in a foreign country is inconvenient.

How Does an eSIM Compare to Buying a Thai SIM Card?

The main advantage of an eSIM is convenience. You arrive in Thailand already connected, skip the airport SIM counter queue, and keep your home number active. Pricing is comparable, and in many cases the eSIM is cheaper when you factor in the time saved.

Best Time to Buy a Thailand eSIM

Buy your eSIM 1-2 days before departure. Install it at home on WiFi where you can troubleshoot if needed. This way you land in Thailand with data ready to go — useful for navigating the airport, booking a Grab ride, and messaging your accommodation.
