Best eSIM for UK Visitors 2026: Data Plans & Setup

Quick Answer

For most visitors to the UK, a 5-10 GB eSIM plan costing $9.99-$19.99 is enough for a 1-2 week trip. The best UK eSIM plans connect to EE or Three, which offer the widest 5G and 4G coverage. Buy your eSIM before you fly — you can activate it the moment you land at Heathrow, Gatwick, or any UK airport.

Which Networks Do UK eSIM Plans Use?

The UK has four major mobile networks. The network your eSIM connects to determines your speed, coverage, and experience.

Most travel eSIM providers route through EE or Three. When buying a plan, check which underlying network is used — it matters more than the provider’s brand name.

What Do UK eSIM Plans Cost in 2026?

Here’s what you’ll pay across major providers for UK-specific plans:

Short Trip (1 GB / 7 days)

Standard Trip (5 GB / 30 days)

Extended Stay (10 GB / 30 days)

Prices approximate, current as of March 2026.

For per-GB plans, e-sim.onl offers the most competitive pricing due to direct carrier partnerships. If you need unlimited data for a short trip (5-7 days), Holafly is worth considering despite the higher per-day cost.

Does 5G Work With Travel eSIMs in the UK?

Yes, most UK eSIM plans support 5G where available. Coverage depends on the underlying network:

• London: All four networks have strong 5G. Central London, Canary Wharf, and major transport hubs are well covered.
• Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow: EE and Three have solid 5G. Vodafone and O2 are patchier.
• Smaller cities (Bristol, Leeds, Liverpool, Cardiff): 5G availability varies by network. 4G is reliable everywhere.
• Rural areas: 5G is essentially nonexistent. 4G covers most main roads and villages, but deep countryside in Scotland, Wales, and Cornwall can drop to 3G or lose signal entirely.

Your phone must support UK 5G bands (n77, n78) to connect. Most phones sold since 2021 do. Check your device in our eSIM compatible phones guide.

Can I Use My Phone on the London Underground?

The London Underground has had 4G and 5G coverage across the entire Elizabeth line and most of the Central, Jubilee, Northern, and Victoria lines since late 2024. Coverage continues to expand in 2026.

What works underground:

• Messaging apps (WhatsApp, iMessage)
• Email
• Maps and navigation
• Social media browsing
• Music streaming

What to know:

• Coverage exists in stations and tunnels on connected lines
• Not all lines are covered yet — the District, Circle, Hammersmith, and Metropolitan lines have partial coverage
• Your eSIM works automatically underground if it connects to EE, Three, or Vodafone (these three provide Underground coverage)
• O2 coverage underground is limited

You won’t need WiFi in most Underground stations anymore, but for lines without cellular coverage, download offline maps in Google Maps or Apple Maps before going underground.

How Is Coverage in Scotland, Wales, and Rural England?

This is where network choice matters most.

Scotland

Wales

Rural England

Tip: If your trip includes remote areas in Scotland or Wales, choose a plan running on EE. It consistently has the widest rural footprint.

How Much Data Do You Need for a UK Trip?

Most visitors on a 1-2 week holiday find 5-10 GB sufficient. UK cafes, pubs, hotels, and train stations generally offer free WiFi, which offloads your eSIM usage.

Tips for UK Visitors

Arriving at airports: Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester, and Edinburgh airports all have strong 4G/5G. Your eSIM will connect immediately after landing — no need for airport SIM card shops.

Train travel: Coverage on trains varies. The London-Edinburgh East Coast Main Line has good coverage. Cross-country routes through Wales or the Scottish Highlands have gaps. Download entertainment before long train journeys.

Contactless payments: Nearly everywhere in the UK accepts contactless/Apple Pay/Google Pay. This is relevant because you won’t need data to process payments — they work offline.

Emergency calls: 999 (UK emergency number) works on any network, even without an active data plan. 112 also works.

Tethering/hotspot: Most eSIM plans allow tethering. Check your plan details — some providers restrict hotspot use on cheaper plans.

Should You Use a UK eSIM or a Europe Regional Plan?

If you’re only visiting the UK, a UK-specific plan is cheaper. But if your trip includes stops in France, Ireland, or other European countries, consider a Europe regional plan instead.

The regional plan costs a few dollars more but covers 30+ European countries. Worth it if you’re taking the Eurostar to Paris or a ferry to Dublin.
